Quality Leads the Way: FAW Jiefang Achieves Significant Results in Six-Month Quality Improvement Initiative

2025-06-01

Amid intensifying competition and price wars in the commercial vehicle industry, FAW Jiefang has chosen to focus on quality rather than engage in price cuts. In line with national requirements for high-quality development, the company launched a three-year quality improvement initiative, implementing a "Quality First" strategy to enhance brand reputation, increase sales, and improve customer satisfaction.

Recent results from the first half of the initiative show remarkable progress:

  • The average distance to the first failure increased by 16%.

  • The mean distance between failures rose by 15%.

  • External quality costs per vehicle decreased by 30.3%.

  • Warranty claims within three months of sale dropped by 26%.

These improvements have significantly boosted perceived quality and customer satisfaction, contributing to FAW Jiefang’s rapid sales growth.

Strategic Leadership and Systematic Planning
FAW Jiefang treated quality enhancement as a top priority, focusing on four key areas: product performance, manufacturing precision, market reliability, and system capability. The company broke down quality targets into 12 dimensions, including design, production, supply chain, and service, forming a detailed plan with 186 critical tasks and 14,801 specific checkpoints. Senior leaders, including the Party Secretary, personally led the effort, establishing a company-wide management system.

Driving a Quality-First Culture
The company fostered a culture of quality across all departments through training, communications, and video campaigns. Employees at every level embraced the principle that "quality is life," striving for zero defects in their respective roles. Cross-functional collaboration ensured rigorous attention to detail in R&D, manufacturing, operations, and marketing.

To date, over half of the first-year quality tasks are on track. The company’s technical association has addressed 27 service quality issues by tackling operational and process challenges, generating practical solutions that strengthen intrinsic capabilities.

Strengthening End-to-End Quality Assurance
FAW Jiefang enhanced its full life-cycle quality management system:

  • Product Development: Conducted extensive validation under extreme conditions—including mountains, plateaus, tropical and frigid zones—to ensure products meet user needs.

  • Supplier Management: Implemented strict reviews and quality controls for components, holding suppliers accountable for defects.

  • Manufacturing and Delivery: Used smart production lines to monitor key parameters and implemented multiple inspection checkpoints to ensure reliability.

  • After-Sales Service: Improved service standards, introduced stricter supervision, and established weekly reporting to address customer dissatisfaction promptly.

In a recent interview, FAW Jiefang Chairman Li Sheng emphasized the company’s commitment to strategic focus and long-term growth, rejecting price wars in favor of leading the industry toward healthy, high-quality development.

As the initiative continues, FAW Jiefang will further deepen its quality campaign, striving for excellence in every detail and reinforcing its reputation for superior manufacturing. The company is committed to building a world-class enterprise and a lasting national automotive brand.
